Day 13 - Safford, AZ to Duncan, AZ (Sandra Day O’Connor Country)

Rode past the point where a cross-country bicyclist was killed in an accident about a week ago. This is a sobering reminder of how careful I have to be.

Landed tonight in the little copper mining town of Duncan, AZ, which happens to have been the childhood home of Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, whose family lived here for over one hundred years. The place oozes authentic, unpretentious old west charm and warmth.

I read a book written by a woman who rode the southern tier about 10 years ago. She spoke about stopping for breakfast here and when she asked for the check the proprietor told her the bill had already been paid by another patron. Sure enough, as I sat eating lunch in what appears to be the same cafe, a kind soul came over and asked if she could buy me a dessert!
