Ghost Bikes

I came across this “Ghost Bike” just south of Silver City today. These are chilling memorials that hopefully draw motorists’ attention and raise public awareness.

  1. For all of us who ride bikes, the topics of driver distraction and road safety are high on our minds. You mention several times that you are being extremely careful and vigilant on this ride. Beyond your construction vest, is there anything specific that you are doing? Any guidance or ideas for the rest of us?

    1. Hi, Anne. I’ll list a couple of things. First, I ride on a lot of very rough highway shoulders outside the rumble strips. I can do this because I ride on 1.5” Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires. Makes for very slow going and rough riding! Second, in crossing intersections I always try to make eye contact with any motorist at the intersection to make sure s/he sees me. If I can’t do that I often stop even if I have the right-of-way.
